Be A Member of A Club For Advice
- Make sure your bitch’s quality is of a good enough standard
to breed. The market is “over stocked” with very poor
quality bitches.
- Seek advice from experts regarding the choice of stud dogs.
- Do not use any stud dog. Attempt to use the best possible stud
dog which could improve on the bitch’s bad points.
- Your bitch must be very healthy and in good condition, de-worming
and inoculations up to date, clean and free of fleas.
- Feeding during pregnancy is of utmost importance. High protein
and extra supplements such as Calsup, milk and eggs, etc. should
be given.
- Feeding while the puppies are still suckling is also of utmost
importance. (A person can never replace what the puppies have
received in the uterus.)
- Seek advice from the club regarding feeding of the bitch and
her puppies.
- Do your planning well in advance, in order to book your stud
dog.
- Bitches go on heat every 6 months and are usually mated on
the 10th – 14th day after bleeding has started.
- Remember that they remain fertile and thus have to be kept
safe up to the 17th day.
- First litter should preferably not be before 18 months.
- One litter per year is recommended.
- The contraceptive pill or injections are not recommended. Stud
dog owners have found that the bitches are aggressive when mated.
For a fee, the club will supply a list of possible buyers, if
you abide by the prescribed rules, e.g. feeding, ect. The puppies
must also be of a good quality.
